2010 - Actress Patricia Neal dies of lung cancer at 84. She won an Best Actress Oscar for Hud in 1964.
 
2008 - Bad Company reunite for a one-off show at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida. It's the first time since 1999 that all the living original members -- singer Paul Rodgers, guitarist Mick Ralphs and drummer Simon Kirke -- have performed together.
 
2005 - Peter Jennings, the Canadian-born anchor of the A-B-C evening news for more than 20 years, dies of lung cancer at the age of 67.
 
2004 - Fay Wray, the actress who romanced "King Kong" in the greatest monkey movie of them all, dies in New York at the age of 96.
 
1992 - At the Barcelona Summer Olympics, the U-S basketball "dream team," which includes Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, David Robinson, Patrick Ewing and Scottie Pippin, defeats Croatia to win the gold medal.
 
1987 - U-2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" reaches number-one on the Billboard singles chart.
 
1986 - David Crosby is released from prison after serving time for drug and weapons possession.
 
1976 - Boston releases Boston.
 
1974 - Eric Clapton's chart-topping comeback album, 461 Ocean Boulevard--which contains his number-one version of "I Shot the Sheriff"--is certified gold.
 
1974 - President Richard M. Nixon announces he will resign in the wake of Watergate.
 
1970 - Creedence Clearwater Revival releases "Looking Out My Back Door" as a single.
 
1969 - The Beatles' Abbey Road cover photo is shot in London. It's full of what some fans believe are coded clues tied to the "Paul Is Dead" controversy. Two examples: he's seen in bare feet and holding a cigarette in the "wrong" hand, and the Volkswagen Beetle with the "28-IF" license plate.
 
1967 - George Harrison checks out San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district during the Summer of Love.
 
1964 - Another Side of Bob Dylan is released.
 
1964 - Eric Burdon of The Animals tells Billboard about his group's name. The former Alan Price Combo was re-dubbed with a name that "was probably associated with the kind of music we play, earthy and gritty. It's sort of an animal sound, and on stage we can be pretty wild."
