2008 - Bernie Mac, the fast-talking comic who rocketed to fame in the concert documentary The Original Kings of Comedy, dies of complications from pneumonia at age 50.
 
1995 - Grateful Dead singer-guitarist Jerry Garcia dies of a heart attack while in drug rehab. He was 53.
 
1990 - A Florida judge orders Red Hot Chili Peppers Flea and Chad Smith to pay five-thousand dollars each to a rape crisis center after a college student says they spanked her and tried to pull off her bikini bottom.
 
1977 -  Randy Bachman leaves Bachman-Turner Overdrive. The band will replace him and continue for a while as B.T.O..
 
1975 - Bad Company, The Eagles, Roger Daltrey, Joan Baez and Stevie Wonder are winners at the first Rock Music Awards, Don Kirshner's version of the Grammys.
 
1975 - The Eagles finally crack the British charts with "One of These Nights." None of the Hall of Fame band's previous singles-even the U-S number-one "Best of My Love"-had done anything on The Beatles' and The Rolling Stones' home turf.
 
1974 - Vice President Gerald R. Ford of Michigan is sworn in as the 38th President of the U-S.
 
1971 - Elton John records "Tiny Dancer."
 
1971 - Leroy "Satchel" Paige is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
 
1969 - In the early morning hours of August 9th, pregnant actress Sharon Tate is stabbed to death and four others are killed (knives and gunshots) in a home in the Hollywood Hills. Charles Manson and his cult are later convicted of the crime.
 
1969 - Jethro Tull's second album, Stand Up, tops the U-K album chart.
 
1968 - The Beatles record "Mother Nature's Son."
 
1963 - B-B-C T-V debuts its new rock and roll show, Ready! Steady! Go!
 
1962 - Robert Zimmerman legally changes his name to Bob Dylan.
 
1945 - The U-S drops a second atomic bomb on Japan, killing 74-thousand people in Nagasaki.
 
1936 - Jesse Owens wins his fourth gold medal at the Berlin Olympics.
