2006 - Pink Floyd's original guitarist Syd Barrett is laid to rest in a private ceremony in his hometown of Cambridge, England. No Floyd members attend. Barrett had died ten days earlier.
 
1996 - Chas Chandler, The Animals bassist who went on to manage and produce The Jimi Hendrix Experience, dies of an aortic aneurysm at age 57.
 
1994 - Elton John and Billy Joel perform the first of two shows at Foxboro Stadium outside Boston.
 
1988 - The Democratic Convention nominates governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusettes for President and Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen for Vice President.
 
1987 - Lynyrd Skynyrd begins a world tour in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
 
1986 - Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards signs a solo deal with Virgin Records.
