2006 - Pink Floyd's original guitarist Syd Barrett is laid to rest in a private ceremony in his hometown of Cambridge, England. No Floyd members attend. Barrett had died ten days earlier.
 
1996 - Chas Chandler, The Animals bassist who went on to manage and produce The Jimi Hendrix Experience, dies of an aortic aneurysm at age 57.
 
1994 - Elton John and Billy Joel perform the first of two shows at Foxboro Stadium outside Boston.
 
1988 - The Democratic Convention nominates governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusettes for President and Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen for Vice President.
 
1987 - Lynyrd Skynyrd begins a world tour in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
 
1986 - Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards signs a solo deal with Virgin Records.
 
1978 - Slugger Reggie Jackson and feisty manager Billy Martin have a fistfight in the Yankees' dugout.
 
1978 - Fleetwood Mac kicks off a summer tour at the Alpine Valley Music Theater in Troy, Wisconsin.

1976 - The Beach Boys, with "Rock and Roll Music," and The Beatles, thanks to the re-release of "Got to Get You Into My Life," are together in the Top 10 for the first time since September 1966.
 
1974 - Bob Gibson joins Walter Johnson as the only pitchers to notch 3,000 strikeouts in the big leagues.
 
1974 - The Moody Blues open their own studio, the first designed for quadraphonic recording, in London.
 
1970 - The Randall's Island Rock Festival begins in New York. The two-day event stars The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Grand Funk Railroad, Jethro Tull, Steppenwolf and others.
 
1967 - Jazz saxophone great John Coltrane dies.
 
1967 - The Beatles' "All You Need Is Love" is released in the U-S, 10 days after going on sale in Britain.
 
1965 - "Here Comes the Night," by Them, the Belfast group led by Van Morrison, is released as a single.
 
1955 - Disneyland opens.
