2002 - Eddie Van Halen posts a note on Van Halen's website saying he's gotten a "100-percent clean bill of health" from his doctors in his recovery from cancer.
2002- M-T-V airs the 10th and final episode of The Osbournes' first season.
2001- While Lou Reed is in Amsterdam, a hoax announcement of his death is circulated on the Internet.
1991- A wrongful death suit against Ozzy Osbourne is dismissed after a Georgia couple fails to prove that Ozzy's music inspired their son to attempt suicide.
1987- Shelley Long makes her last regular appearance as "Diane Chambers" on Cheers.
1984- The Soviet Union withdraws from the summer Olympics in the U-S.
1975- President Gerald Ford formally declares an end to "The Vietnam era."
1973 - George Harrison releases "Give Me Love," the first single from Living in the Material World. It will become his second number-one single.
1972- Elton John becomes the legal name of the performer born Reginald Kenneth Dwight.
1971- The Rolling Stones release "Brown Sugar" as a single in the U-S.
1971 - On their way home from an unpublicized gig in Sunderland, England (all tickets 50 pence, about $1.25), The Who stop for a roadside leak outside Sheffield and shoot the cover for Who's Next.
1967- Jefferson Airplane performs "Somebody to Love" on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.
1966 - An Irish newspaper reports an IRA threat to blow up The Who during their Dublin concert if the group wear their Union Jack jackets.
1959 - The Los Angeles Dodgers hold "Roy Campanella Night" at the L-A Coliseum in front of 93,103, the largest crowd to ever attend a baseball game.
1940 - Winston Churchill becomes the British Prime Minister.
1928 - England lowers the voting age for women from 30 to 21.
1914 - President Woodrow Wilson issues a proclamation making Mother's Day a national holiday on the second Sunday of May.
