2008- A 42-cent postage stamp honoring Frank Sinatra goes on sale on the 10th anniversary of his death.
2008 - Filter's Anthems for the Damned album arrives in stores.
2007 - Pope Benedict the 16th condemns both communism and capitalism as "systems that marginalize God" during a speech in Brazil.
2004 - N-B-C airs the final episode of Frasier.
2002- U-2 debut a new song, "Hands That Built America," done for the Martin Scorsese film Gangs of New York, via a live performance simulcast from Ireland to New York's Tribeca Film Festival.
1996- At a wild party at Chicago's Crowbar, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam leads a chorus of "Happy Birthday" for Dennis Rodman.
1985 - Bruce Springsteen marries actress Julianne Phillips on her 25th birthday. She will file for divorce three years later.
1983 - The Smiths release their first single, "Hand in Glove."
1977 - Manfred Mann's Earth Band performs "Blinded by the Light" and Heart does "Magic Man" on The Midnight Special.
1972-Bonanza co-star Dan "Hoss" Blocker dies at age 43 of a blood clot.
1971- In San Francisco, Jefferson Airplane recording sessions are halted after singer Grace Slick smashes her Mercedes into a wall near Golden Gate Park.
1970- The Beatles' Let It Be movie has its world premiere in New York.
1970 - Badfinger starts recording "No Matter What."
1968- Peace talks between the U-S and North Vietnam begin in Paris.
1966 - The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black" single is released in the U.K. It will go to number-one there, as well as in the U-S.
1966-The Kinks record "Sunny Afternoon."
1950- Diner's Club issues the first credit cards.
