2008 - Megan Fox is named the "Sexiest Woman in the World" by FHM magazine.
 
2008 - The original lineup of Jane's Addiction performs at the inaugural U-S edition of the NME Awards in Los Angeles. It's their first performance together in 17 years.
 
2006- Phil Walden, who managed such recording stars as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave and signed The Allman Brothers to his Capricorn label, dies of cancer. He was 66.
 
2001- Mark Knopfler starts the U-S leg of his Sailing to Philadelphia tour in Boston.
 
1998 -James Earl Ray, who confessed to assassinating the Reverend Martin Luther King Junior in 1968 and then insisted he was framed, dies in a Nashville hospital at age 70.
 
1995 - Famed sportscaster Howard Cosell dies.
 
1989 - Kareem Abdul-Jabar plays his last regular season game in the N-B-A.
 
1985 - The Coca-Cola Company announces that it is changing its 99-year-old secret formula. New Coke is not successful, which results in the resumption of selling the original version.
 
1978 - Sid Vicious films his violent rendition of "My Way" for the Sex Pistols film The Great Rock and Roll Swindle.
 
1976 - The Ramones' self-titled debut album is released.
 
1975 - Badfinger lead singer Pete Ham commits suicide, just days after quitting the band. The Welsh band's key songwriter, Ham grew despondent over contractual problems with Warner Brothers Records.
 
1975 - Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom" is certified gold.
 
1971 - The Rolling Stones release Sticky Fingers, the first album on the group's self-named label.
 
1960 - Billed as The Nerk Twins, John Lennon and Paul McCartney play the first of two nights at The Fox and Hounds, a pub in Caversham, Berkshire owned by Paul's cousin, Bett Robbins.
 
1955 - Buddy Holly trades in his first electric guitar, a Gibson Les Paul gold-top, and 305-dollars for a Fender Stratocaster at Adair Music in Lubbock, Texas. Buddy played most of his big hits on this instrument.
