2002- Robert Blake and his bodyguard Earle Caldwell are arrested for the murder of Blake's wife, Bonny Lee Bakley, who was shot in the couple's car outside a Studio City, California restaurant the previous May.
 
2001- Carlos Santana does an in-store appearance at Macy's in San Francisco to present his new apparel line, which includes women's shoes and men's hats and ties.
 
1999- Wayne Gretzky, the holder of 61 league records, plays in his last N-H-L game.
 
1995- Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers retires from football after 17 N-F-L seasons.
 
1981- Yes announces that the group is disbanding.
 
1979 - The palimony era begins as actor Lee Marvin is ordered to pay an ex-girlfriend 104-grand.
 
1977 - Steve Miller, whose current hit is "Fly Like an Eagle," is profiled in People.
 
1975- An Alice Cooper TV special, Welcome to My Nightmare - The Making of a Record Album, airs.
 
1974 - Steely Dan performs at the Orpheum Theater in Boston.
 
1969 - Led Zeppelin start their second US tour at a New York Jazz Festival on a bill with Dave Brubeck and Errol Garner. During the tour, the band will head to various studios on their days off to work on Led Zeppelin II.
 
1966 - The Lovin' Spoonful, whose current hit is "Daydream," perform at the Marquee Club in London.
 
1964 - The Beach Boys lip-synch "I Get Around" and "Don't Worry Baby" on American Bandstand. The rest of the show is devoted to Beatles music, and Dick Clark plays a phone interview he recorded with the Fab Four while they were in Miami two months earlier.
 
1956 - American actress Grace Kelly marries Prince Rainier of Monaco.
 
1955- Albert Einstein dies.
 
1923 - Yankee Stadium opens in The Bronx, New York.
 
1906 - The Great San Francisco earthquake takes place
