1999 - Wayne Gretzky announces his retirement from the National Hockey League.
 
1993- Billy Burnette announces he's leaving Fleetwood Mac to concentrate on country music. The band survives the loss.
 
1993 - Celebrating Earth Day, Paul McCartney plays a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. He had previously performed there in 1965, as a member of The Beatles.
 
1993 - David Lee Roth is arrested for buying $10 worth of pot in New York's Washington Square Park.
 
1981 - Canned Heat founder Bob "The Bear" Hite dies of a heart attack in L-A at age 36. Although he was the band's lead singer, he wasn't the voice of its two big 1968 hits. Both "On the Road Again" and "Goin' Up the Country" were sung by the group's slide guitarist, Alan Wilson, though Hite did the vocals on their 1970 Top 30 hit "Let's Work Together." After his death, Hite's younger brother became the band's vocalist.
 
1976 - Boz Scaggs is beaten by two bouncers outside Austin club Antone's when he attempts to get backstage and see the headliner, Bobby "Blue" Bland.
 
1973 - Paul McCartney and Wings star in a British television special, James Paul McCartney, which includes a rendition of "Yesterday" and footage from several concerts.
 
1972 - Apollo 16 lifts off on a mission to the Moon.
 
1971 - Ringo Starr releases "It Don't Come Easy" in the U.S. It becomes the ex-Beatle's first Top 10 hit.
 
1971 - The Rolling Stones celebrate the launch of their label, Rolling Stones Records, in Cannes, France, on the day the company releases its first single, "Brown Sugar," in the UK and Europe.
 
1969 - The Beatles start recording "Something."
 
1966- The Rolling Stones' Aftermath album is released in the U-S.
 
1964 - The Beatles record "A Hard Day's Night" in nine takes at Abbey Road Studio Two in London.
 
1943 - The hallucinogenic effects of L-S-D are first discovered.
