2008- The Zombies, with all four surviving originals in the lineup, perform the first of three London concerts built around their classic album Odessey and Oracle.
 
2007- The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band tops the Definitive 200, compiled by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and National Association of Recording Merchandisers.
 
2006 - Pink Floyd singer-guitarist David Gilmour releases his first solo album in 22 years, On an Island.
 
2005- Bob Dylan starts a tour with country legend Merle Haggard in Seattle. Billed as The Bob Dylan Show, the tour features multi-night stands in many major cities.
 
2001 - 2004- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is named executive editor of Muscle & Fitness and Flex magazines.
 
Pearl Jam sets a record for the most debuts on the album chart in a single week, as seven of the band's official live bootlegs reach the Top 200.
 
1999- Stanley Kubrick, the American-born director of such films as Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange, dies at his home outside London.
 
1999- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers begin a seven-night stand at the Fillmore in San Francisco.
 
1976- Elton John becomes the first rock artist since The Beatles to have a wax sculpture on display at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in London.
 
1975- David Bowie releases Young Americans.
 
1970- Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water album starts a 10-week run at number-one.
 
1969- The Who's "Pinball Wizard" is released as a single in Britain, giving the public its first taste of the rock opera Tommy.
 
1968 - Cream records the drum showcase "Toad" for Wheels of Fire at the Fillmore West in San Francisco.
 
1964- The Beatles' "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" are neck and neck for the top spot on Billboard's singles chart.
 
1933- Parker Brothers introduces Monopoly.
 
1927- A Texas law that bans African-Americans from voting is ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
