2011- A massive earthquake just off the coast of northern Japan, destroys buildings and triggers a tsunami that kills thousands in the country’s Miyagi prefecture.
 
2011 - Stan Ross, co-owner of LA's famed Gold Star Recording Studios, dies at 82. Known for being ace producer Phil Spector's favorite studio, among the hits created there were Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues," The Crystals' "He's a Rebel," Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" and Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth."
 
2007- Heaven and Hell -- better known as the Ronnie James Dio-era version of Black Sabbath -- kick off a tour in Vancouver, Canada.
 
2004- The California Supreme Court orders San Francisco to halt issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
2000 - KISS kick off their multi-year Farewell Tour in Phoenix, Arizona.
1997 - Paul McCartney is knighted by Queen Elizabeth.
 
1993- Janet Reno is unanimously confirmed by the Senate to become the first female Attorney General of the U-S.
 
1990- Lithuania proclaims its independence from the U-S-S-R.
 
1976- Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" is certified gold.
 
1972- Neil Young's Harvest album is number-one on Billboard's album chart.
 
1970- At the 12th annual Grammy Awards, The Fifth Dimension wins Record of the Year for "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In." Blood, Sweat & Tears takes Best Album, and Crosby, Stills & Nash are named Best New Artist.
 
1970 - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young release Deja Vu, the album which includes "Woodstock," "Teach Your Children" and "Our House."
 
1969- Levi-Strauss starts selling bell-bottomed jeans.
 
1967- Pink Floyd release their first single, "Arnold Layne," in the UK.
 
1967- The Lennon-McCartney tune "Yesterday" is named the most-covered song of all time.
 
1930- Babe Ruth signs a two-year contract with the New York Yankees for $80,000.
