2011- Onetime sexpot actress Jane Russell (Some Like It Hot) dies of respiratory failure at 89.
2007 - The Doors are given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
2004 - Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King wins a record-tying 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
2002 - It is announced that John Madden will be replacing Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football. Madden signs a four-year, $20-million deal with A-B-C Sports.
2001 - The Northwest, including the state of Washington, is hit by an earthquake that measures 6.9 on the Richter Scale. There are no deaths reported.
1994- The Brady Law, imposing a waiting period to buy a handgun, goes into effect.
1991- The Record Plant in Hollywood closes.
1985- Former Uriah Heep singer David Byron dies of a heart attack at 38.
1985- The Firm, featuring Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Bad Company's Paul Rodgers, kick off their first U-S tour in Dallas, Texas.
1983- The final episode of M*A*S*H airs and is the most watched television program in history.
1979 - Mr. Ed, the talking horse, dies.
1976- Paul Simon wins in two categories and The Eagles win one for "Lyin' Eyes" at the 18th annual Grammy Awards.
1972- "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" becomes the first Wings single released in the US.
1970- Led Zeppelin play a show in Copenhagen billed as The Nobs, due to a lawsuit threatened by a relative of airship designer Ferdinand Zeppelin if the band uses the Zeppelin name in Denmark.
1966- Liverpool's Cavern Club, where The Beatles rose to fame, closes.
1963- John Lennon and Paul McCartney write "From Me to You" on the way to a gig in Shrewsbury, England.
1959- Cash Box magazine begins using a red bullet on its record charts to indicate the records that have the strongest upward movement each week.
1951 - A Senate committee issues a report that states that there are at least two major crime syndicates in the U-S.
