2008 - Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, is found dead of natural causes at his hotel room in Portland, Oregon.
2002- Stan Lee files suit against Marvel Entertainment claiming the company has cheated him out of millions of dollars in profits related to the 2002 movie Spider Man.
2002- Pearl Jam release their seventh studio album, Riot Act.
2001- 260 people die when American Airlines Flight 587 crashes in Queens, New York.
1995- The space shuttle Atlantis blasts off on a mission to dock with the Russian space station Mir.
1990- Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood is injured when he's hit by a car near London.
1990-  The I-R-S seizes all of Willie Nelson's assets, including a golf course and recording studio, to satisfy a six-and-a-half-million-dollar debt.
1987 - The American Medical Association issues a policy statement that says it is unethical for a doctor to refuse to treat someone solely because that person has AIDS or is H-I-V-positive.
1980- Bruce Springsteen has his first chart-topping album, The River.
1975- Don Shula of the Miami Dolphins becomes the first N-F-L head coach to win 100 regular season games.
1975 - Rod Stewart and The Faces play their final show together at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island, New York.
1974- George Harrison performs a pair of shows at the Forum in L-A.
1974- Queen releases Sheer Heart Attack in the U-S.
1973 - Paul McCartney & Wings release "Helen Wheels" in the U-S, two weeks before the single goes on sale in Britain.
1973- Rod Stewart is profiled in Time magazine, which notes that 10 years earlier he'd been a part-time grave-digger and 25-dollar-a-week soccer player in a London suburb.
1967 - Paul McCartney supervises the editing of the promotional film for The Beatles' "Hello Goodbye." It will debut two weeks later on The Ed Sullivan Show.
1954- Ellis Island, the immigration station in New York Harbor, closes after processing more than 20 million immigrants since 1892.
1933- In Philadelphia, the first Sunday football game is played.
