2010 - Bonanza and Trapper John, Pernell Roberts dies of pancreatic cancer at 81
2010 - German hard rock band Scorpions release a statement saying that their 2010 album, Sting in the Tail, and subsequent tour will be their last.
1995- Van Halen release Balance, their last album with lead singer Sammy Hagar.
1989 - Serial killer Ted Bundy is executed.
1985- Penny Harrington becomes the first woman police chief of a major city. She assumes the duties as head of Portland, Oregon's force of 940 officers and staff.
1984- Linda McCartney is fined 75 pounds for attempting to smuggle marijuana into England.
1979- The Cars are named best new band of the year in Rolling Stone's readers' poll.
1979- The Clash release their first U-S single, a cover of "I Fought the Law," the song originally popularized by The Bobby Fuller Four.
1969 - The Doors perform at Madison Square Garden in New York.  
1964- The Detours, later to be known as The Who, open for The Hollies at a ballroom show in London.
1964 - C-B-S acquires the rights to televise the National Football League's 1964-1965 regular season for $14.1 million a year. The NFL will stay on C-B-S for 30 years.
1962- Jackie Robinson becomes the first black player inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
1958 - The Quarrymen Skiffle Group plays The Cavern in Liverpool for the second time -- but the first for Paul McCartney, who was off on a scout trip for the first.
1955 - The rules committee of Major League Baseball announces a plan to strictly enforce the rule that requires a pitcher to release the ball within 20 seconds after taking his position on the mound.
1947- Al Capone dies in Miami Beach at age 48.
1935- Kreuger Cream Ale is the first beer sold in cans.
1922 - Eskimo Pie, the chocolate-covered ice cream treat, is patented by Christian K. Nelson of Onawa, Iowa.
